An entirely free platform, and one of the best
under-utilized promotional tools for business?
Craigslist. In this blog post your Pegasus Ventures
webmaster talks smart execution using Craigslist to
promote your small business. The goal, as always? Grow
top line sales.
Traditional Equation Advertising
Working with many small business owners, Pegasus Ventures often hears, 'X advertising company never works me, Y company does work." More often how the small business owner uses the platform contributes more to effectiveness than the nature of the platform, itself. Advertising in a coupon book, for example, with the same offer found elsewhere or a small offer works once or twice but sees diminishing returns over time. One measures results by a questioning equation, "Of 100 people taking advantage of the deal we earned 20 new customers visiting us once every week spending on average $30 contributing $31,200 a year in new top line sales." From the equation one better decides the cost to bring new in new customers.
Non-Traditional Equation Advertising
Craigslist and social media platforms use a wholly different equation. "If I post an ad on Craigslist X times each day how many people come to visit my website who convert into customers in the course of a month, a quarter or a year?" Think tortoise and hare, and the good news? Just like in the story, the tortoise usually wins by slow consistency. For Craigslist, and indeed all social media platforms, one earns a win consistently appearing in front of customers passing by and catching their eye.
Craigslist, and other internet platforms, promote presence rather than drawing in customers with offers. Craigslist remains almost unutilized to the vast majority of small business owners leaving the Craigslist space wide open.
Competition on Craigslist
People posting on Craigslist compete for position and the attention brought from the better position. Post in all categories relating to your business, then watch the stream of posts. Pegasus Ventures suggests when clicking on a category look for your ad to be always visible and adjust post frequency accordingly. Use HTML symbols so your advertisement stands out. (Click or tap now for a a link for HTML symbols, just highlight and copy the symbol paste it into the ad title)
People often share they've posted, "once or twice." Bad plan with Craigslist. Post a number of advertisements and then time renewals so your business consistently appears.
create several ads over several days, get two
Post a number of advertisements and then time renewals so your business consistently appears. Craigslist helps by allowing "one click" renewals of advertisements every couple of days. So if one posts 5 ads over 5 days one need only click "renewal" to re-up those ads in a few days. One note, Craigslist only allows one ad per category once every 24 hours and requires verification of accounts by phone and email. So consider verifying a couple of accounts using two different email addresses.
